Rescue Old Low-Rise Pants

Posted by Marina on 17 October 2023

Do you have a pair of low-rise pants sitting neglected in your closet? Maybe they no longer fit as well as they used to, or perhaps the low-rise trend isn't your style anymore. But before you consider tossing them aside, let me share a little secret with you!

I too had a beloved pair of pants that didn't quite fit anymore. I grew tired of constantly having to pull them up. However, with a stroke of inspiration, I found a clever solution. I took an old T-shirt that was also a bit too snug and ingeniously transformed it into a waistband for my pants.

By adding this makeshift band to my pants, I resurrected them from their forgotten state and breathed new life into them. Now, they fit like a dream and stay in place effortlessly. It's amazing what a small tweak can do!

So, before bidding farewell to your low-rise pants, consider this creative DIY solution. You might just reinvent a beloved item from your wardrobe and give it a second chance to shine.

Materials:

  1. Low-rise pants
  2. An old T-shirt
  3. Scissors
  4. A sewing machine or a serger with yarn
  5. Sewing clips or pins

Steps:

Step 1: Start by laying out your T-shirt and pants on a flat surface.

Step 2: With a pair of scissors, carefully cut off the waistband of the pants. Additionally, create a wide band by cutting a large section from the body of the shirt. I personally used the entire torso of the shirt, resulting in a band that is generously wide (this ensures that there will be no concerns about the pants sliding down).

Step 3: To conceal the print on my shirt, I turn it inside-out. Using a serger (or a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch if you don't have one), I create a seam on the outside. This seam replaces the current side seams and becomes the new inside of the shirt. If your shirt is wider, you may want to make it narrower for a snug fit. Remember, the shirt should be slightly narrower than the pants for a polished look.

Step 4: Take the strip of your T-shirt and fold it in half lengthwise, ensuring that the right side is facing out and the new seam you just created is on the inside.

Step 5: Align the raw edges of the T-shirt strip with the waist of your pants. Secure the T-shirt strip in place with pins or clips. As the band is slightly narrower than the pants, you may need to stretch it a bit for a snug fit. Use a sewing machine or a serger to stitch the T-shirt strip to the pants. Remember to remove the pins or clips as you sew, and gently stretch the seam to align the shirt band with the pants.

And voila! You've successfully transformed your old low-rise pants into a comfortable, high-waisted pair. This repurposing project not only gives you a stylish new item for your wardrobe but also helps you contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. So why not give it a try?
